Gisborne House Builders - Dawson Builders - About Us

Born and bred in Gisborne, Peter Dawson completed his Master Builders qualifications in 1986 and began his own business which he has built up today to include over thirty staff, trained eighteen apprentices and built over forty homes.

Dawson Building Company is a certified Licensed Builder.

Peter's first job as a young builder himself was to assist in the whole build of Gabiru, an outback town in Australia. He had completed his apprenticeship with TW Lewis & Son over four years and then went on to build his first home at 7,000 sq. feet fresh out of his term at the age of 23 years.

Dawson Building Company has a credible reputation in the Gisborne region and as all good businesses maintain, their work is on recommendation from others and the company would prefer to retain a long term relationship with its clients and support repeat business.

Not only is it Gisborne residential properties that the company specialises in but the range includes commercial and farm maintanence, school renovations and fit outs.

More recently Peter Daswon Building Company commissioned the new Kathmandu retail showroom in Gladstone Road, Gisborne.

Why use Licensed Building Practitioners (LBP's)

The LBP scheme is one of the changes in the Building Act 2004 to encourage better building design and construction.

From 1 March 2012 critical building work that is known as Restricted Building Work, must be done by an LBP (Licensed Building Practitioner).

This scheme sets out a regulated process where skilled and/or qualified building practitioners are required to demonstrate their ability to meet industry consulted competencies in order to obtain the status of being a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP). The scheme has seven license classes:

  • Designers
  • Carpenters
  • External Plasterers
  • Bricklayers and Blocklayers
  • Foundation specialist
  • Roofers
  • Site (These are on-site supervisors or managers)

Registered Architects and Plumbers as well as Chartered Professional Engineers are also deemed to be licensed.
