Midway Surf Life Saving Club – Gisborne’s Premier Beachfront Community Hub
Midway Surf Life Saving Club, a cornerstone of Gisborne’s coastal safety since 1952, now operates from the state-of-the-art Midway Surf Rescue Community Hub on Centennial Marine Drive. Completed in November 2023, this iconic facility was constructed by Dawson Building Co, a respected local firm known for delivering high-quality commercial projects across Tairāwhiti. The new hub features a lifeguard tower with 180-degree ocean views, modern offices, a members’ lounge, and a community hall. It also houses Tahu, a licensed restaurant emphasizing local produce, and The Kiosk, offering beachside refreshments. The design incorporates Māori cultural elements, such as a carved figure representing Hine Hakirirangi at the entrance, gifted by Ngāi Tāwhiri. This redevelopment not only enhances lifeguard operations but also provides a vibrant space for community events, meetings, and social gatherings, reinforcing Midway SLSC’s role as a central hub for both safety and community engagement in the region.
